Description
The call that started this event planning business plan
Illiaja has had three careers, and they only look unrelated from the outside. He started as a kids’ party animator in Birmingham, the one who keeps sixty children busy for four hours and sends them home tired and happy. Then New York: creative manager at an event agency, holiday parties and product launches for companies with a thousand people on the guest list. Then, by accident, a year as a project manager in IT, a three-month contract that turned into twelve, full of sprints, risk logs and a written status every Friday.
His friend’s December was the brief. A hundred and eighty guests. RSVPs arriving after the deadline. Children running between the tables because nobody had planned for them. A budget that drifted 25% over. And in January, a CFO asking what the thirty thousand dollars had achieved, with no report to answer him.
That is a project management problem wearing a party hat. It is also the buyer: HR directors and office managers at employers with 50 to 2,000 staff, who run events on top of a full-time job.
Three versions that did not survive the math
Version one: an agency for every kind of event
Weddings, birthdays, corporate, anniversaries. It failed the first screen. Weddings book nine to fourteen months ahead, so a planner who starts in February sees that money the following year, and Eventective already lists 26 planners for Birmingham, most of them built around brides.
Version two: back to the kids’ parties
Familiar ground and real skill, at $450 to $900 a party. The break-even math asked for more than forty parties a month to clear $10,000 of owner profit. Parties happen on weekends, and a month holds eight or nine weekend days.
Version three: corporate events, almost
Company events at $4,900 with a coordinator on payroll from month six landed at about $580 in month 3 and $9,300 in month 12. Close enough to be tempting, short on both deadlines.
